The Enneagram is a powerful system for understanding personality, motivation, and human behavior. At its core, it describes nine distinct types, each representing a different way of seeing the world and responding to it. But more than just a personality framework, the Enneagram is a tool for self-awareness—it helps you understand not just what you do, but why you do it.
Although its exact origins are debated, the modern Enneagram draws on a blend of ancient wisdom and contemporary psychology. The symbol itself was introduced to the West by George Gurdjieff in the early 20th century, while the personality system we use today was later developed and expanded by thinkers such as Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo in the 1960s and 70s. Since then, it has continued to evolve, finding its way into psychology, coaching, leadership development, and personal growth work around the world.
Unlike many personality systems that focus on traits or behaviors, the Enneagram looks deeper, exploring the underlying fears, desires, and patterns that drive how we think, feel, and act. Each type has its own strengths, challenges, and growth path, offering insight into both your natural tendencies and your potential for change.
The nine types are interconnected, meaning no one fits into a box completely. Instead, the Enneagram reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of who we are. As you learn about the types, you may begin to recognize patterns in yourself and others—patterns that can lead to greater empathy, clarity, and personal growth.
Whether you’re just curious, or on a deeper journey of self-discovery, the Enneagram offers a meaningful way to better understand yourself and the people around you.
Working together, the Enneagram can become a practical and compassionate guide for change. As a therapist, I use it to help you gently uncover the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, while also highlighting your innate strengths and capacities. Together, we can explore how your type shapes your relationships, emotional responses, and sense of self—and, importantly, how to loosen its grip when it no longer serves you. This isn’t about putting you in a box, but about creating more choice, flexibility, and freedom in how you live your life.
If you’ve started your Enneagram journey already, have an idea of your type, and are looking to deepen your understanding, I can work with you to natigate the complexities of the system and how it can support you in life. Or, if you are interested in seeing where you fit with the Enneagram, I can support you in exploring which type most resonates for you.
Personally, the Enneagram has been the most insightful and meaningful discoveries of my life – it has provided me with a toold for self awareness, presented the most useful directions for growth and offered the most supportive landscape. As a holistic therapist the Enneagram system is my own most therapeutic tool.
I have been independantly studying the Enneagram for most of my adult life, and I have returned to it at every challenging time I have faced. In more recent years, in my career as a therapist, I have returned to the Enneagram for more formal study with Enneagram Training UK and Somatic Enneagram with Marion Gilbert. These experiences have equiped me to bring the insight and wisdom of the Enneagram system into working with my clients.
Please feel welcome to contact me to discuss working with the Enneagram, no matter your level of previous experience with it.
Just for fun….
Here are some ways that you might be interested in working that are relevant to type. Of course, there are many reasons you might choose a particular way of working, not just Enneagram type, so please feel welcome to get in touch to discuss any of these or a combination of them all.
